I can never look upon that Proclamation in any other light (but this I say between ourselves) than as a temporary expedient to quiet the Minds of the Indians and must fall of course in a few years especially when those Indians are consenting to our Occupying the Lands.
George Washington
WORD OF THE WEEK Democratic Racism: Represents a deep tension that is present in (among others) Canada, UK, USA and their indigenous populations.
It arises from the clash between the reality of pervasive racism and commitment to the ideology of democratic liberalism. It is the hardest to get rid of because it is masked.
Examples in the Inuit context include unmet land claims agreements, barriers to influence policies and programming, unequal access to employment, education, and other resources such as housing and food.
